A home theater system was once thought of as only a luxury reserved for the rich and famous.  Now however, with technology and communications all blending together and running so many facets of our lives, these audio video systems are becoming a household item that people are budgeting for the way that a microwave used to be considered.

As with anything that is technology based and avante garde at some early stage, the pricing eventually comes down as manufacturers and distributors alike find ways to make and sell items cheaper and in greater volume.  After all, this is what most successful products do in order to become as popular and “household” in name and familiarity.  Lower their costs and mass produce to reach more masses.

The home theater system and component market now has “smart” televisions that can house internet browsers and act as a computer with all the functionality that computer systems have.  Memory and storage is probably the last of what  these systems need since the hard drive portion of these can be connected to a pc instead of inherently built into the system itself.  Clearly, the cost there of the computer hard drive significantly affects the bottom line.

Perhaps that too may change as time marches on.  These systems now have built in plugins for popular programs that heretofore required a laptop or pc connection separately.  Netflix and Youtube channels are now available for instance as well as Pandora for music.  Videophiles and movie aficionados enjoy this Netflix feature while music lovers will grasp the Pandora music channel.

Our dependency on the interrelationship of audio-visual-computer-and now, mobile technology, only underscores the rapid speed of the confluence of these things intertwined in our lives.  With the ability to control household operations i.e. lights, electricity, water, and hvac from our mobile and computer items, and home security systems that utilize similar gadgets, building contractorswill now begin to make such “luxuries” standard items that will set their homes apart from the others.

Built in DVD’s in cars comes to mind as an interesting break through in auto entertainment for families travelling to and from with kids in tow.  Now, more and more vehicles have added these to their inventory.  With connectivity becoming paramount in our lives, these multi functional units are no longer just entertainment for the leisure, but rather they are our lifeline to the world and communications that we cannot do without.  Visual and sound will always be important ways that human beings communicate and transmit information and with the advances that avail themselves today, home theater systems will only become that much more of a household fixture.
